About Piet
Piet Kommers is Emeritus Professor at the University of Twente and one of Europe's leading experts on AI in education.
His work spans nearly five decades — from early AI programming and expert systems in the late 1970s to today's machine learning applications for smart educational support.
He began developing adaptive hypertext strategies at Utrecht University, and went on to pioneer knowledge representation through conceptual structures. As a professor at the University of Twente, he taught courses on AI and knowledge representations for media design.
Piet chaired NATO Advanced Workshops on cognitive tools for learning, led EU projects on immersive 3D education, and served as chair of the IADIS international conferences.
UNESCO and Capital Normal University in Beijing awarded him the title of Honorary Professor.
His most recent book, AI for STEAM in Education (Springer, 2026), explores how AI becomes instrumental to thematic, cross-disciplinary learning.
